Climate

Climate Types

Ethiopia’s climate is mainly tropical as it lies between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer, however it varies by different topographical regions. In Ethiopia’s central plateau, the climate is moderate with very little seasonal temperature changes. In the lowlands, the temperature changes are much more variable with the desert and Red Sea coastal areas having occasional highs of 60 degrees Celsius or 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Although many people might assume that Ethiopia is a dry, desert, heavy rainfall actually occurs from June to August. On top of that, the High Plateau goes through another rainy season between December and February (Nations Encyclopedia).

Seasonality

According climatemps.com, the mean annual temperature of Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa (altitude:7,625 feet), is 15.9 degrees Celsius, or 60.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Negele whose altitude is 4,738 feet, has the annual mean temperature of 19.5 degrees Celsius, or 67 degrees Fahrenheit. According to coolweather.net, Honolulu's average annual temperature is 77.1 degrees Fahrenheit which I find really shocking, actually. As I've mentioned above, seasonality differs depending on your location in Ethiopia. In Addis Ababa and Negele, cities that air fairly high in altitude compared to the other cities, seasonality is not as large.
