Ethiopia is located to the far east of the African continent. It is bordered by Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, and Eritrea. Although the country does not extend to the ocean, it is very close to the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Indian Ocean. Ethiopia is a landlocked country, which means that it has no direct access to the ocean. However, there are still natural water sources like the Blue Nile River, which runs along the northwest part of the country into Lake Tana and a portion of Lake Turkana also lies within the Kenya-Ethiopian border. The country’s terrain consists of a high plateau with a central mountain range divided by the Great Rift Valley. Ethiopia is roughly 1/7 the size of the continental United States.
